This message lists legal clinics in Los Angeles County that provide free legal advice or assistance. The first group of clinics helps with general legal problems. The second group of legal clinics helps with consumer law and bankruptcy problems. The third group of clinics helps with domestic violence problems and family law problems. The last group helps with immigration matters. At the end of this message, we describe the other SmartLaw messages you can check out to learn about more low-cost and free legal services.

The following clinics help with a variety of general legal problems:

UNIVERSITY OF WEST LOS ANGELES holds clinics on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on a first come, first served basis. Law students and law school staff provide advice mainly to assist clients representing themselves. Areas of advice include family law, juvenile dependency, general civil litigation and landlord/tenant matters. The LONG BEACH BAR ASSOCIATION holds a Courthouse Counseling Program in Department 4 of the Long Beach Courthouse on the first and third Tuesday of each month. An attorney provides you with 10 to 15 minutes of free legal advice. The clinic is first come, first served. For more information call the Long Beach Bar at (562) 988-1122.

The LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES offers free advice and assistance for low income tenants in landlord-tenant matters. Assistance is available from 9 to 5, Monday through Friday, both by telephone and walk-in. For information, call (213) 487-7609, or visit them online at www.lafla.org.

The LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES offers an eviction clinic in its Long Beach office on Thursdays from 9 to 11:30. The office is located at 110 Pine Avenue, Suite 420. Call (562) 435-3501 for more information.

The LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES offers driver’s license reinstatement and record expungement clinics once a month at rotating job training and placement sites in South Los Angeles. The clinics provide free legal advice and self-help assistance. Advance registration is required. To register for the driver’s license clinic, call (213) 640-3954 or (213) 640-3976. The LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES operates two weekly community clinics to assist individuals with questions and cases regarding their workplace rights.   One clinic is located in downtown Los Angeles every Wednesday evening starting at 5:00 p.m., at Las Familias del Pueblo, a community center located at 307 East 7th Street, (between Maple and Wall Street). The other clinic is located in Long Beach every Thursday evening starting at 4:00 p.m., at Centro Shalom, a community center located at 2131 Long Beach Blvd. in Long Beach.

All employment clinics operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and are free of charge. It is important that you bring relevant documents with you such as: the name and address of the employer; calendars, timecards or other timekeeping records that you may kept yourself; and paycheck stubs or other records of how much you were paid. If you are a garment worker, bring any garment labels that you worked on.

The INNER CITY LAW CENTER helps with slum housing litigation and government benefits such as General Assistance, food stamps, and SSI. Clinics are held every Monday and Thursday. Assistance is provided to only ten people per clinic, on a first come, first serve basis. The Center suggests arriving at 7:45 in the morning and the doors open at 9 a.m. The Inner City Law Center is located at 1309 East Seventh Street, in Downtown L.A. The CITY OF SANTA FE SPRINGS LEGAL SERVICES offers a free advice-only clinic in most areas of civil and criminal law. Services are limited to residents of Santa Fe, Pico Riviera and unincorporated parts of Whittier. The clinic is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, by appointment only. You must call for an appointment on Monday mornings between 9:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. at (562) 692-0261. The following two clinics help with credit counseling and Bankruptcy issues:

CONSUMER CREDIT COUNSELING SERVICE offers free Education Workshops every other month. Workshops focus on budgeting, balancing your checkbook, home ownership, IRS problems, surviving a layoff, and housing defaults. Consumer Credit Counseling Also provides free counseling sessions on budgeting and money management. For more information call their toll-free number at (800) 388-2227. 

The LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES provides individual counseling to people having debt or credit problems at its monthly Debt Crisis Clinic. The Debt Crisis Clinic is held on the third Tuesday of each month except December at 6:00 PM at 1102 Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles. To register for the clinic, call (213) 640-3964.

The following four clinics help with Domestic Violence matters:

The Los Angeles County Bar Association's DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROJECT provides in pro per assistance with temporary restraining orders at walk-in clinics at the Los Angeles Superior Court and at the Pasadena Superior Court. The Los Angeles walk-in clinic is located at the Los Angeles Superior Court, Department 8, Room 245, 111 North Hill Street and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Clients are served on a first come, first served basis. For more information about the Downtown Clinic, call (213) 624-3665.  The Pasadena walk-in clinic is located at the Pasadena office of the Los Angeles Superior Court, Room 100, 300 East Walnut Street and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES holds a Domestic Violence Clinic which prepares restraining orders, and may provide representation in guardianship, paternity and custody cases to prevent domestic violence from occurring. The walk-in clinic is located in room 102 of the Long Beach Courthouse,, at the corner of Ocean and Magnolia in Downtown Long Beach, and is open from 9 to 11:30 and 1 to 3:30, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The TOLL COUNSELING CENTER of the LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES offers legal advice to low-income people who meet other eligibility requirements on emergency custody and visitation issues, domestic violence, child abduction/concealment, sexual assault, and to parents defending against guardianship actions.  The walk-in only clinic operates on a first-come, first-served basis each Monday, Wednesday and Friday that the court is open from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.  Please arrive early because the lines can be long.  The Toll Center is located at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse at 111 N. Hill Street on the second floor in Room 245

The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles SANTA MONICA Domestic Violence Walk-In Clinic at the Santa Monica Superior Court assists victims of domestic violence obtain restraining and other protective orders. The program operates Monday through Friday, from 8:30 to 11 :30 on a first come, first served basis. They also offer other family law services for victims of Domestic Violence. It is located at 1725 Main Street, room 121, in Santa Monica.

SINGLE PARENTS UNITED 'N KIDS holds a dissolution clinic the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. There are no citizenship or income requirements; however, clients cannot own real property, have a pension or retirement plan, or have a military case. Clients must know the whereabouts of the other party. A $30 donation is requested. To sign up for the clinic, call (562) 984-2580. The following four clinics help with Immigration problems:

IMMIGRATION LEGAL ASSISTANCE PROJECT holds clinics that assist with filling out immigration forms and translating, certifying, and notarizing legal documents. An initial consultation fee of $20 is charged and clients are sometimes charged a nominal fee for services beyond advice and counseling. The INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE, INC. provides resettlement assistance to newly arriving refugees, and immigration services to refugees and immigrants. There are nominal fees for some types of immigration services. They take clients on a first come first serve basis and are open Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. CARECEN offers legal advice on citizenship immigration, immigration civil rights, work authorization problems, human services, and youth empowerment to residents of the Pico-Union area. There is no fee, donations are accepted. Call (213) 385-7800 to set an appointment for an interview, referral or brief service; your call will be returned within 24 hours.

The LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES provides a variety of immigration services. Most of the services are provided for free to eligible clients. Examples of the kind of cases they handle include self petitions, U-visas and removal of conditional resident status for victims of domestic violence; U-visas for victims of other violent crimes; T-visas for victims of human trafficking; family reunification and adjustment of status for torture survivors with refugee or asylum status;  and, citizenship (naturalization) services for lawful permanent residents.  Eligible clients are provided with services ranging from referral, counsel and advice, brief service and full representation.  To access our services, call (213) 640-3913.  Leave a message with a brief description of the problem or immigration service you need and your contact (telephone) information.
